Beyond the Visible: Where Identity Meets Perception

Mumbai, October 2026: Sculptor Yash Chaulkar presents Dual Vision, a compelling solo exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery from 27 October to 2 November 2026. Through an evocative collection of sculptures and masks, the exhibition invites viewers to explore the complex relationships between identity, perception, power and the evolving idea of the self.

At its core, Dual Vision examines the dualities that shape human existence the tension between dominance and submission, control and vulnerability, and the observer and the observed. It challenges the boundaries through which we understand ourselves and others, encouraging viewers to question whether identity is something we possess, something society assigns to us, or something continually shaped by the gaze of others.

Masks, with their theatrical presence and symbolic associations, become powerful metaphors for the many layers of human identity. They conceal and reveal, protect and expose, creating a space where appearance and reality coexist in an uneasy yet fascinating relationship. Through these forms, Chaulkar explores the intricate process of self-construction and the subtle mechanisms through which perception can become an expression of power.

The exhibition raises a thought-provoking question: When we stand before an artwork, are we merely observers, or do we exercise power through our act of looking? Perhaps we are also participants in a larger visual experience, where the artist’s vision, the artwork’s presence and the viewer’s interpretation continually influence one another.

The collection features figurative marble sculptures, metal-cast works and abstract forms, each possessing a distinct physical presence and psychological depth. Fragmented faces, exaggerated features and meticulously crafted shapes suggest imagined identities, concealed emotions and untold human stories. The materiality of stone and metal contrasts with the intangible dimensions of memory, vulnerability and inner conflict, creating a dialogue between substance and sentiment.

Through a thoughtful interplay of form, texture, expression and spatial presence, Chaulkar transforms raw materials into evocative artistic experiences. His sculptures move beyond physical representation, becoming reflections of the contradictions and complexities that define human life. Each work invites viewers to pause, observe and discover meanings that may shift with their own experiences and perspectives.

Dual Vision creates an intriguing space where imagination gives rise to genuine emotional responses, and where neither artist nor viewer retains complete control over meaning. The artwork becomes a mirror sometimes familiar, sometimes unsettling — revealing the multiple identities and opposing impulses that exist within the human condition.

Ultimately, Dual Vision is more than an exhibition of sculptural forms; it is an invitation to look beyond appearances, reconsider our assumptions and recognise that every face, every mask and every perspective holds more than one truth. By bringing together artistic expression and psychological inquiry, Yash Chaulkar offers viewers an opportunity to encounter art not simply as an object to be seen, but as an experience to be questioned, felt and interpreted.

This show was inaugurated on 27th October 2026 by Honourable Guests – Smt. Urmila Kanoria Chairperson of Kanoria Centre of Arts, Ahmedabad, Mr. Anant Singhania CEO, JK Enterprises & Director, JK Organization
